 Sculpture is one of the most interesting and complex of the arts. It ranges from Michelangelo`s powerful carvings to African masks worn in relegious ceremonies and from stone statues that decorate cathedrals to metal mobiles that sway gracefully in the air

A piece of sculpture can be small enough to stand on a table or as large as the Statue of Liberty. But wether large or small sculptures tends to have a monumental quality. A quality of grandeur and nobility in a work of art. Even the smallest piece of sculpture has the power to express noble and grand ideas.

Many artists create sculpture to satisfie their creative need to communicate, to express their own ideas and feelings or simply to create an object of beauty. When we look at a piece of sculpture we can ask ourselves: "what is the sculptor saying in this work?" or "Why do I find this work beautiful, profound or disturbing?".

De beeldhouwkunst is een van de interessantste en ingewikkeldste van alle kunstvormen. Het varieert van Michelangelo`s krachtige werk tot Afrikaanse maskers, gedragen in religieuze ceremonies en van stenen beelden, die kathedralen versieren tot metalen mobiels, die bevallig in de lucht zweven.

Een beeldhouwwerk kan klein genoeg zijn om op een tafel te staan of zo groot als het Vrijheidsbeeld. Maar groot of klein, een beeld heeft een monumentale uitstraling. Grootsheid en edelheid in één kunstwerk. Zelfs het kleinste beeldhouwwerk heeft de kracht om edelheid en grote ideeen tot uitdrukking te brengen.

Veel artiesten maken beelden om hun kreatieve behoefte tot kommunikatie te bevredigen, om hun gevoelens tot uitdrukking te brengen of eenvoudig iets van bijzondere schoonheid te maken. Als we naar een beeldhouwwerk kijken, kunnen we onszelf vragen: "Wat zegt de beeldhouwer door middel van dit werk?" of "Waarom spreekt dit beeld mij aan, wat is de diepzin ervan of waarom stoort het mij?"
